Statement from the artist

I love advice. From barflies, best friends, people at parties. Even if I don’t follow it, I like collecting what’s on offer. It’s curiosity, partly, but it’s also a habit of comfort: When I’m unsure of something, I like sensing someone else’s certainty.

In the fall of 2014, I arrived at a retirement community in Westchester, New York, heavy with grief. It was my mother’s advice I missed. Maybe women with a long view on loss could tell me something reassuring. How do we keep going? How can I be happy? What makes a life worth living?
